This is the Conspicuous Gallantry Medal (Navy) 2nd type.
The Second World War saw the award of 72 conspicuous gallantry medals and it was in 1943 that a counterpart of this level award was instituted for the RAF, of which 110 awards were made.
No bars were awarded to the CGM during the reign of King George VI.
The RAF version, CGM (Flying) is identical to the Navy version but is suspended by its own ribbon where the centre broad stripe is sky blue.
